Ingredients

  • Oil: 1 tablespoon
  • Onion (diced): 1 tablespoon
  • Ginger Garlic Paste: 1 tablespoon
  • Green Chilies: 3 (chopped)
  • Red Chili Powder: 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric Powder: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Coriander Powder: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black Pepper Powder: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt: To taste
  • Red Lentils (Masoor Dal): 100 grams
  • Water: 2 cups
  • Coriander Leaves: For garnish

For Tempering (Tadka):

  • Clarified Butter (Ghee): 1 tablespoon
  • Onion (thinly sliced): 1/2 medium-sized
  • Cumin Seeds: 1 teaspoon
  • Curry Leaves: A few
  • Kashmiri Red Chili Powder: 1/4 teaspoon

Method

1. Preparing the Dal:

  • Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
  • Add diced onions and fry until they turn golden brown.
  • Stir in the ginger garlic paste and sauté until the raw smell disappears.
  • Add chopped green chilies and sauté for another minute.
  • Reduce the flame to low and add red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, black pepper powder, and salt. Sauté for a minute, adding a little water to prevent the spices from burning.
  • Add one large chopped tomato and cook until it becomes soft and smooth.
  • Wash and soak the red lentils for 15 minutes before adding them to the pan.
  • Pour in 2 cups of water and stir in a few coriander leaves.
  • Bring the dal to a boil over high heat, then reduce the flame to low and simmer for 10 minutes or until the lentils are fully cooked.

2. Preparing the Tempering (Tadka):

  • In a separate small pan, heat clarified butter (ghee) over medium heat.
  • Add thinly sliced onions and fry until they are golden brown.
  • Add cumin seeds and curry leaves, and sauté for a minute until fragrant.
  • Stir in Kashmiri red chili powder, mix well, and immediately pour this tempering over the cooked dal.

3. Serving:

  • Garnish the dal with fresh coriander leaves.
  • Serve hot with roti, chapati, or steamed rice.
