Ingredients:

  • Rice: 1 cup

  • Moong Dal: 1 cup

  • Potatoes: 2, diced

  • Green Peas: 1/3 cup

  • Ginger (grated): 2-inch piece

  • Garlic Cloves: 6

  • Curry Leaves: 12 to 15

  • Onion: 2, chopped

  • Tomato: 1, chopped

  • Green Chili: 1 or 2, chopped

  • Asafoetida (Hing): 1/4 tsp

  • Cumin Seeds: 1 tsp

  • Turmeric Powder: 1 tsp

  • Red Chili Powder: 1 tsp

  • Garam Masala Powder: 1 tsp

  • Cooking Oil: 4 tbsp

  • Salt: to taste

  • Coriander Leaves: for garnish

For Tadka:

  • Ghee: 1 tsp

  • Garlic Cloves (chopped): 4

  • Curry Leaves: 8

Method:

  • Prepare the Ingredients:

    • Rinse the rice and moong dal thoroughly under running water. Soak them for about 30 minutes, then drain.

  • Cook the Base:

    • In a pressure cooker, heat 4 tbsp of oil.

    • Add asafoetida and cumin seeds. Let them splutter.

    • Add grated ginger, whole garlic cloves, and curry leaves. Sauté for a minute.

    • Add chopped onions and fry until they turn golden brown.

    • Add chopped tomatoes and green chilies. Cook until the tomatoes become soft.

  • Add Vegetables and Spices:

    • Add diced potatoes and green peas. Mix well.

    • Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and garam masala powder. Stir to combine.

    • Add the soaked and drained rice and moong dal to the cooker. Mix everything well.

  • Pressure Cook:

    • Add enough water to cover the rice and dal mixture (approximately 4 cups).

    • Add salt to taste.

    • Close the lid of the pressure cooker and cook on low flame for about 1 minute.

    • Allow 4 whistles, then turn off the flame.

    • Let the pressure release naturally. Open the lid and mix well.

  • Prepare the Tadka:

    • In a small pan, heat 1 tsp ghee.

    • Add chopped garlic cloves and curry leaves. Fry until the garlic turns golden brown.

    • Pour this tadka over the cooked Kichri.

  • Serve:

    • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

    • Serve hot with a side of yogurt or pickle.
